Name : Thabang Ramaila

About : Thabang Ramaila was born on the 05th October 1978. He started performing as an actor in 1996. In 1999 he joined Jabavu Anti-Crime Aids Awareness (JACAAYA). That’s where he co-created his Award winning play “Amabhantiti”, an anti-crime play which premiered @ Stop Crime Drama Festival. “Amabhantiti” went on to tour schools around Soweto. At JACAAYA he was introduced to dance (African & Traditional dance). In June 2000 he was recruited by Halala Afrika Theatre Society (HAATS), that’s where he developed Artistic skills of directing, script-writing & choreography. After 5 months @ HAATS, he became the Ass director. He directed his 1st play “Beyond 2000” workshoped by him & the artists. “Beyond 2000” was an Aids awareness drama play and it went on to win 3 awards (Best Director, Best play & Best Actor). It was invited @ Market Theatre Laboratory Community Festival. From there his love for creation took off. At HAATS he created, directed & choreographed 2 other plays. In 2002 he went to study dance & choreography @ Moving Into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) for 2 years. During his 1st year at MIDM he was recruited by Soweto Kliptown Youth (SKY) to become a resident choreography & co-coordinator. During his stay @ SKY he created a Multi Award winning Poetry in motion “Letters from Squatter camps”, which went on to win 14 awards in festivals around Gauteng. He was instrumental in empowering those disadvantages kids from Kliptown Squatter camps. That’s where he developed a passion for writing & creating songs. 7 kids from SKY went on to become professional artists with International tours on their belts. After graduating @ MIDM his career took off as a performer, he joined UK based theatre company Dodgy Clutch. He been part of Dodgy Clutch & its award winning internationally acclaimed show “Elephant” till to date. He’s the principal dancer & head choreographer for the show. All this years he’s been travelling & touring with “Elephant”. He’s been to England, Ireland, Scotland, Spain & USA (Broadway). He was a nominee of several awards with “Elephant”.

Thabang was featured on Award winning SABC 1 drama series “When we were black”. He has toured, taught, ran workshops abroad and he has won numerous awards on festivals around Gauteng as a Creator, Director, Writer and Choreographer. In 2004 he created his 1st major dance season “Moments Dance Season” funded by National Arts Council (NAC). Most of his works is influenced by his childhood upbringing and he adores creating works that are based on true stories. He has performed in SA & International festivals: Dance Umbrella, “NAF” Grahamstown, Macufe, Arts Alive (SA), Live Aid Concert, Opening of Sage Music Centre, Edinburg Festival, Stockton Arts Festival (All UK). Zaragoza Expo (Spain). He has worked with acclaimed Choreographers such as Jay Pather, Neville Campbell, Gregory Maqoma, Gary Gordon & Alfred Hinkel. He’s currently the Artistic Director of award winning Dinganga Theatre Creation’s, a dance theatre organisation he formed in 2008.
